Today is International day of Pediatricians. This day on the medical calendar was specially chosen on November 20th, because it was on this day in 1959 that the United Nations adopted the Declaration on the Rights of a Child, and the right to health is one of the fundamental rights of a human regardless of age, gender, nationality, religion or citizenship.
Pediatric Service, with several pediatric departments, is one of the cornerstones of “Arabkir” Medical Complex. Our pediatric team is cooperating with foreign colleagues, always guided by the best examples of international experience.
The Department of Pediatrics N2 of YSMU is based in “Arabkir” MC and is headed by professor Ashot Alexander Sargsyan. Professor Gayane G. Amaryan, Associate Professors Sergey G. Sargsyan, Hasmik G. Sargsyan and Nune G. Mkrtchyan teach in the Department as well. Today, young pediatricians who studied and trained under the leadership of our highly qualified specialists, are fulfilling their professional mission both in “Arabkir” MC and in other medical institutions of the republic.

Unique Neurosurgical Procedures in "Arabkir" MC

Neurosurgeons Krasimir Minki (general surgeon, Associate Professor), Kaloian Gabrovski (Assistant) and epileptologist Petia Dimova (Associate Professor) from the University Hospital of Saint Ivan Rilski were at "Arabkir" MC. A team of Bulgarian and Armenian neurosurgeons operated on a group of patients with severe, drug-resistant epilepsy whose problems appeared for various reasons: congenital brain defects, strokes in early childhood, inflammatory diseases, hippocampal sclerosis etc.
Before the surgery, they underwent long-term video-EEG monitoring, MRI and PET scans, computerized comparison and post-processing of the past examinations were performed.
In many of the patients, it was also possible to perform seizure EEG, which further clarified the location of the epileptogenic zone.
Performed surgeries, including unique and rare operations in Armenia, such as hemispherotomy, "everything but motor" operation, have so far shown 95 percent effectiveness and can free most of the patients from chronic administration of anticonvulsant drugs.
The operations were performed under awake and asleep intraoperative neurophysiological monitoring.
Pediatrics Congress has started

Congress participants were greeted by the Minister of Health Anahit Avanesyan, the scientific director of “Arabkir” MC-ICAH, professor Ara Babloyan, the head of the Armenian EyeCare Project Nune Eghiazaryan and the director of International Digital Health Center of Children’s Hospital Los Angeles James Dickhoner.

Pediatric Congress on October 28 - 30

On October 28 - 30 the joint online pediatric congress of Armenian Pediatric Association, Armenian EyeCare Project and Children’s Hospital Los Angeles will take place at “Arabkir” MC-ICAH conference hall. The congress is implemented in cooperation with University Children’s Hospital of Zurich, as part of the 7th National Pediatric Conference and 19th AECP/CHLA International Conference.
This scientific and practical conference is intended for pediatricians, family doctors and other pediatric specialists from the RA.
The Pediatric Congress Program includes numerous lectures provided by professors and lecturers from University Children’s Hospital of Zurich (Switzerland), Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (USA), as well as from leading pediatric clinics in Armenia and Departments of Pediatrics of Yerevan State Medical University. The lectures are dedicated to modern pediatric problems.
During 3 days, the following pediatric topics will be discussed: COVID-19 infection and Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in children (MIS-C), the experience and problems of COVID-19 management in Armenia, preterm neonatal care and transitional care features, pediatric palliative care, management of pediatric obesity and precocious puberty, diagnosis and management of anxiety disorder and other mental health problems in children, fever without infection, Epstein Barr virus. The most interesting cases of COVID-19 infection and other diseases will be presented and discussed.

Cooperation Agreement with French “Proteor” Company

A cooperation agreement was signed between the “Ortez” (“Arabkir” MC, “ArBeS” Health Center) and French “Proteor” companies. From now on, the “Ortez” Orthotic and Prosthetic Center will be the only and exclusive representative of the world-known “Proteor” company in Armenia.
“We are happy to cooperate with French colleagues! This will give us an opportunity to bring to Armenia and the region the prostheses and orthopedic equipment made with new technologies by a company with more than a 100 years history, which are successfully used by millions of people all over the world” Ara Tekyozyan, the director of the “Ortez” Center has mentioned.
Tarek Lamiri, “Proteor” Board of Directors member, assured that their main goal is to improve patients’ lives with many opportunities. The product is well-thought and it meets different needs and requirements of the patient.
“Ortez” Orthotic and Prosthetic Center in Armenia was founded in 1997. In July this year the new building, equipped with new technologies, was opened. It is aimed at expanding rehabilitation services in Armenia and providing services to war participants as well.
Ara Babloyan is sure that this cooperation with “Proteor”, one of the largest French companies, will help provide high quality rehabilitation services with European standards. Professor Babloyan proudly mentions that “Arabkir” MC is one of the leaders in Armenia in the field of rehabilitation services by founding not only “ArBeS” Health Center in Yerevan, but 7 regional branches as well. It was a great pleasure to welcome a well-known Swiss neurologist Prof. Eugen Boltshauser at “Arabkir” JMC.

This was the first visit of the professor to Armenia after the restrictions of Covid-19, and the 22nd during the years of cooperation between the University Children's Hospital of Zurich and "Arabkir" University.
The pediatric neurologists of "Arabkir" JMC and of other medical institutions had preselected all the patients whose cases deserved special attention and discussion. From September 22 to October 2, the professor consulted 35 patients, listened to their parents and treating physicians, expressed his opinion, and, if necessary, took some biomaterials for certain tests in the laboratory of the University Children's Hospital of Zurich
In addition to practical consultations, attended by 40-50 physicians, Professor Bolsthauser arranged MRI-discussions of rare diseases, as well as theoretical training for pediatric neurologists and pediatricians. He presented spectacular clinical cases from his practice, listened to the opinions of his Armenian colleagues, and told about the chosen treatment paths.
Professor Eugen is one of the great advocates for the development of young professionals, who supports their participation in various courses, and membership to EPNS. It should be noted that the department of Neurology and Neurosurgery Service of "Arabkir" JMC is named after Professor Eugen Boltshauser in honor of years of warm cooperation. ️
Hearing Aids for Participants of War

“Armenia Hearing Aid Project” (founded by Kavouchkian family, LA) - hearing aids for participants of the 2020 war in Artsakh, has launched. This project is initiated by the “Arabkir” Medical Complex and the Arabkir United Children’s Charity Fund and with the help of benefactors of the Armenian community in the US. From October 1st to 4th servicemen with hearing disabilities can visit “Anabella” hotel on 17 Mamikonyants str, where all stages of selection, adaptation and installation of hearing aids are organized.
Today the project team welcomed Tatevik Stepanyan, the Deputy Minister of Labour and Social Affairs. Ms. Stepanyan ensured that such initiatives of Charitable, Public Organizations and individuals are really a great help both for beneficiaries and for the republic.
The project started by collecting data on beneficiaries. It was implemented in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense, Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs, Medical Institutions, Public Organizations and individuals. Of the 250 registered, about 170 people were examined, 130 of whom will be provided with hearing aids at this stage. US-based Armenian beneficiaries have expressed their willingness to support more war participants and the beneficiary registration process is still going on.
Modern digital hearing aids, able to compensate even for profound hearing loss, are provided. After computational adjustments of hearing aids beneficiaries will receive free aftercare services, such as troubleshooting and for other possible problems. Hearing aids work with rechargeable batteries.

Course for Nurse - Lecturers in “Arabkir” MC

In the framework of the Continuous Professional Development Program for nurses the Nursing Council of the “Arabkir” MC together with the “Semra Plus” Foundation and professors from cantonal Nursing School of Jura, Switzerland have conducted the third and last module for nurse - lecturers of the complex. The module was about “Expressive and Creative Skills of a lecturer”. The goal of the module is to prepare participants for teaching in the future firstly for the staff, and for other nurses from different republican healthcare institutions, newly graduated nurses, after the opening of the Continuous Development School. During this 3-day module 7 future lecturers received theoretical knowledge and presented their first lectures.
The “Semra Plus” Foundation is a Public Organization, founded in 1992 with the efforts of Jean-Pierre Bernhartd, after the 1988 earthquake in Armenia. From the first days of its establishment, the Foundation has been supporting the development programs of “Arabkir” MC in favor of the Armenian children needing medical care. The Foundation helps “Arabkir” MC by providing the necessary equipment, professional training and exchange programs. As a result of this cooperation, 35 healthcare programs were implemented in Armenia to date, aimed at children’s healthcare, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and developing new fields of medicine.
Since 2016 special attention is paid to the nursing professional development programs aimed at strengthening the responsibility and independence of a nurse. Today the Continuous Professional Development Program for nurses is preparing nurse - lecturers. It was from this idea that the next one was born, to create a Continuous Developmental Center contributing not only to the professional development of our complex, but to newly graduated nurses and nurses from other medical denters as well.

First time in Armenia the Wada test was performed in “Arabkir” MC

For the first time in Armenia “Arabkir” MC’s specialists team performed the Wada test, which is an important examination prior to the neurosurgical treatment of epilepsy.
The purpose of this test is to determine the dominant hemisphere, which is necessary during the operation in order to not to damage speech, memory and motor centers. The examination team includes neurosurgeons, neurologists, anesthesiologists, EEG technicians and developmental pediatricians. The first test in “Arabkir” MC was conducted by neurosurgeon Sevak Badalyan, anesthesiologists Aghavni Hambardzumyan and Vahe Kharatyan, neurologist Biayna Sukhudyan, EEG technician Tamara Araskhanyan and developmental pediatrician Irina Tovmasyan.
The patient is 11 years old with focal structural epilepsy, and has epileptic seizures with daily frequency. The test was performed with anesthetic medication approved by international guidelines, with accepted standards of neurological and developmental assessment.
At the beginning of the test cerebral angiography was performed in order to determine possible features of cerebral vasculature. The main stage of the procedure started by injecting an anesthetic medication into the internal carotid artery, which is performed by neurosurgeons. The actual testing part began within 5 minutes of the injection. EEG monitoring was done throughout the Wada test, which allows to determine the start and end of the testing.

Rehabilitation Services of “Arabkir” MC are expanding

The opening ceremony of the new building of the “Ortez” orthotic and prosthetic center, built in the territory of the “ArBeS” Health Center of the “Arabkir” Medical Center, took place.
The idea of expanding rehabilitation services became a priority for “Ortez” and “ArBeS” centers in the fall of 2020. During the war “Arabkir” MC, which helped soldiers, changed its direction of main projects, took out a loan and began construction of the new building to create full-fledged conditions with international standards for supporting the wounded.
With the efforts of the “Ortez” center the building was equipped with new devices and technology, which will give an opportunity to cooperate with French partners and further improve the quality of services, bringing them to the level of international standards.
The construction of a swimming pool for rehabilitation therapy is included in upcoming plans for the expansion of rehabilitation services of “ArBeS” Health Center.

Travel without COVID-19

The Laboratory Service of the “Arabkir” MC is included in the “Travel without COVID-19” program. If you have downloaded the mobile application and come to the laboratory at “Arabkir” MC with your passport to take a PCR test, you will immediately receive a QR code and the test result will be reflected in your application.
Attention! If your PCR test result is positive, meaning that the COVID-19 pathogen is detected in your test sample, QR code will be colored in red, which means that you can’t travel to another country. If your PCR test result is negative, the QR code will be green, meaning that you can travel safely.
Sampling procedure must be done not later than 72 hours before the flight. When crossing the border, you only need to provide the QR code on your mobile application.

World Autism Awareness Day

Autism is a permanent neurodevelopmental disorder that appears in early childhood regardless of gender, social status or other circumstances. Autistic people are unique in social relations, they can show extreme interest in some topics, tend to ritualistic behavior and have difficulties in everyday communication. The ways of learning and the ways of processing the information received through the senses are outside the standards for people with autism.
World Health Organization highlights the problems of autistic people by speaking for the elimination of stigma and discrimination against them: this is a problem for both developing and supporting countries. By eliminating stigma and discrimination, efforts to overcome the manifestations of autism will be more effective. And it is possible with the united work of
specialists, family and community.

During the meeting with Vardan Tadevosyan, the Director of the Caroline Cox Rehabilitation Center of Stepanakert, the possibilities of expanding this field with the support of Armenian Diaspora were discussed.
